Waste types and skip bins – what can and can’t go into a skip?

Concrete skip bin

Some skip bins are designed only for building waste such as concrete or bricks

We separate waste types in order to ensure that we can recycle as much as possible.

If we mix certain waste types, it makes it harder to ensure recycling.

For example, we offer a skip bin which is designed to take general waste – that might include –

Household waste
Clothes, paper, cardboard, bedding, towels, kitchenware, bathroom accessories, duvets, cushions

Light commercial waste
Office furniture such as desks, desk tidies, chairs, stationery.

Furniture and Appliances
Cupboards, lounges, washing machines, cots, beds, fridges, chairs, sofas

Light building construction waste
Wood, flooring, wallpaper

Light green waste
Shrubs, grass, foliage, leaves, twigs

The general waste skip bin is popular with households which tend to have a lot of varied rubbish.

A mixed waste skip bin on the other hand is suitable for waste that comes from domestic commercial demolition, construction or renovation

Hardfill waste
Bricks, concrete, tiles – all pieces must be no larger than 600×600

Treated timber
Retaining walls, decking, floorboards, fences, sheds

Household waste
Clothes, paper, cardboard, bedding, towels, kitchenware, bathroom accessories, duvets, cushions

Furniture and Appliances
Cupboards, lounges, washing machines, cots, beds, fridges, chairs, sofas

Green waste
Shrubs, foliage, grass clippings, leaves, twigs, bushes, palm trees

Tree trunks
Trunks must be smaller than 300mm in diameter and under 300mm long

The other options are listed here and include green waste, concrete and brick in addition to a soil and dirt option.

If you’re not sure which to book, just visit our waste types page and read up on what they are and what can and can’t go into each skip bin type.

Using your skip bin and making the most of it

To get the most out of your skip bin, it’s important to use it efficiently. For example, did you know that skip bins can come with a ramp and a rear opening hatch?

This helps users dispose of heavy waste with ease. A wheelbarrow of bricks or concrete can be pushed up the ramp and that’s a lot easier than trying to throw things inside.

Always pack the skip bin with care, otherwise you can cause air pockets and waste space. If you’re not going to be at home on the day your skip bin arrives, please ensure access is easy for your driver.

Avoid overhanging power lines when situating your skip bin

Is there anything I can’t put in a skip?

Yes, you can’t put asbestos in a skip, nor can you add batteries, oils or paints. These things are too toxic or they cause fire risk.

If you have any questions about waste types or managing what you plan to put in the skip bin, contact the team.

Do I need a permit for a skip bin in Stanhope Park?

Only if you want to place the skip bin on public land. If you keep it in your own garden or other land which you own, no permit is needed
