Using your skip bin effectively

To get the most out of your skip bin, it’s important to use it efficiently. Here are some tips.

  • Choose the best spot for the skip bin – close to the rubbish source but away from overhanging tree branches and power lines
  • Never block exits and entrances
  • Use a wheelbarrow to push heavier waste up the ramp (most skips come with a ramp)
  • Lay flat things down inside the skip bin before any other waste
  • Plan for your skip bin to arrive the day before you plan to fill it up, this is because we can’t always say what time the skip bin will arrive though we will try to accommodate those on a tight time schedule

Avoid overhanging power lines when situating your skip bin

Is there anything I can’t put in a skip?

Yes, you can’t put asbestos in a skip, nor can you add batteries, oils or paints. These things do require specialist handling or pose a fire risk.

If you have an old mattress, you can put it in a skip but only if you have first taken it apart and removed the springs. Otherwise, you will incur additional charges as someone at the dump will need to take the mattress apart for you.

If you have any questions about waste types or managing what you plan to put in the skip bin, contact the team.

Do I need a permit for a skip bin in Dean Park?

Not unless you want to place it on public land such as the road or verge outside your home or business. If you place your skip bin in your garden or on some other land you own, then no permit is needed.
